Compactible Solar Bins

Meet the new bin
Installed in the Greenspace on 20 June 2026, this is not your everyday rubbish bin. It is a solar-powered, smart compacting bin. One small change on campus that is making a big difference. This is our pilot bin, once we are happy with it, there is a whole group of them waiting in a warehouse to be rolled out across the campus.
So… what makes this bin different?
• It compacts waste more than 5 times, so it holds far more than a standard bin
• It is fully enclosed, helping prevent litter, odours and mess
• It is powered by solar energy, so it runs sustainably
• It uses smart sensors to notify the Trust when it is time to be emptied
This means less overflow, fewer collections, and a cleaner environment.
Why is this bin here?
Sustainability is a key focus of the QEIIMC Trust and a strategic goal guiding how the campus evolves. Installing this bin is just one of the ways the Trust is working towards more sustainable outcomes across the campus; turning big ideas into practical, everyday improvements you can see and use. This initiative is turning that commitment into real, visible action.
Why this matters: the bigger picture
The QEIIMC Trust Sustainability Framework and Design Guidelines help shape how the campus is designed, built, and managed over time. Think of them as a roadmap that ensures everything on campus contributes to a more sustainable, efficient, and people-friendly environment.
This solar-powered compacting bin is a great example of those principles in action by:
• Using renewable solar energy
• Reducing waste collection services, cutting down on emissions and disruption
• Keeping spaces cleaner, safer, and more inviting
• Using smart technology to improve efficiency and resource use
How does this help the campus day-to-day?
• Fewer collection trips mean less traffic, less noise, lower emissions
• No overflowing bins means cleaner, more pleasant surroundings
• Smarter servicing means only being emptied when needed
• Better use of resources means improving overall efficiency
All of this helps keep the campus running smoothly while enhancing the experience for everyone who uses it.
What happens next?
This installation in the Greenspace, marks the start of a roll-out. More bins are expected to be introduced over the coming months.
How can you help?
It is easy:
• Use the bin as intended
• Dispose of your waste responsibly
• Be part of creating a cleaner campus
A smarter bin for a smarter, more sustainable campus
This solar-powered bin is a small but meaningful step. This highlights how innovation and everyday actions can work together to make a real impact.
