Welcome to the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (QEIIMC) – located in Nedlands, Western Australia. Once a grazing property, this 28.4-hectare site has evolved into the largest medical centre in the Southern Hemisphere.
Situated on a single integrated campus, QEIIMC unites world-renowned hospitals, research institutes, and education providers, while delivering essential services for patients, staff and visitors.
The campus hosts over 40 organisations, including Sir Charles Gardener Hospital (SCGH), Perths Children's Hospital (PCH), the University of Western Australia (UWA) Health Campus and the Lions Eye Institute.
QEIIMC demonstrates visionary planning and a strong commitment to improving lives by continually delivering major medical, educational, and research facilities, including PCH, a Comprehensive Cancer Centre, the Ralph and Patricia Sarich Neuroscience Research Institute and the SCGH Mental Health Unit.
QEIIMC's story began in 1910 when the State Government acquired the land in Nedlands, laying the foundation for what would later become a hub of medical excellence.
In 1922, UWA secured a 999-year lease over the site, embedding its role in health education and research. The land was formally designated for a medical centre, with a teaching hospital at its core in 1953.
This vision was strengthened in 1966 through the Perth Medical Centre Act (now the QEIIMC Act 1966), which established the medical centre reserve and created the QEIIMC Trust (the Trust).
In 1977, what was previously known as the Perth Medical Centre was officially renamed the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre, to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, marking a new chapter in its history.
Precinct stewardship is provided by the Trust - an independent statutory authority established under the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre Act 1966. The Trust is responsible for the development, control and management of the 28.4-hectare reserve.
Today, QEIIMC stands as a leading health, education and research precinct in Australia. More than just a collection of buildings; it is a collaborative environment where hospitals, research institutes, education providers work together to advance health care and improve community well-being.
Looking ahead, QEIIMC is committed to enhancing its facilities and services through strategic planning and innovation. The vision encompasses continued growth and leadership in medical research, education, and comprehensive patient care.
From humble pastoral beginnings to becoming a pioneering medical centre, the QEIIMC has followed a remarkable path of transformation. Each milestone reflects unwavering commitment to innovation, excellence, and community service.
This dedication to advancing healthcare and research will continue to serve as a guide for creating meaningful impact on lives, both on campus and beyond.
